Château Fonplégade
Since 2004, Denise Adams has overseen viticulture and winemaking at Château Fonplégade. The vineyard forms a natural amphitheater, gathering sunlight along south-facing limestone slopes, shaping wines of striking structure, elegance, and depth.
Style
Enticing on the palate, the wines of Château Fonplégade reveal deep blue and red fruit laced with a hint of vanilla, framed by bright acidity and mineral tension. Fine, graceful tannins accent a long, balanced finish. Merlot forms the majority of the blend, joined by Cabernet Franc.
Vineyard
Château Fonplégade’s 30 individually managed parcels descend Saint-Émilion’s Côte Sud. Clay-limestone soils resting on asterian limestone give way to brown limestone over clayey marl, and finally to deep sandy-clay loam at the hillside’s foot. The vineyard is certified organic and Biodynamic, with each block farmed on its own to preserve the truest expression of its soil.
Winemaking
Grapes undergo careful selection and a light cold maceration for gentle extraction. The must ferments in wooden or concrete vats, with indigenous yeasts from the vineyard ushering the transformative process from juice into wine. A sixteen-month élevage follows, in French oak barrels, both new and once used, alongside concrete eggs and amphorae. This balance of vessels refines the tannins while preserving the wine’s aromatic precision and the limestone’s mineral clarity.
